We meet on campus by the flagpoles early in the morning at 5:45 AM and set off for Mexico as soon as everyone is accounted for. Lunch is eaten before we reach the border.
Soon after we reach the clinic, we begin to see patients. We’ll usually encounter about 30 patients on the average trip. Members of the Flying Samaritans are able to triage patients, direct the patients into waiting rooms, assist dentists with check-ups, and run medications for the attending doctor. In-depth knowledge of Spanish is not required, although it can be very helpful. For those not as familiar with the language, Spanish translations of questions to ask patients are provided. Another helpful sheet describing parts of the body can be found here and a handbook can be found here.
In the afternoon when all the patients have been seen, we leave the clinic for dinner. This time, we stay on the Mexican side of the border and customarily dine at a taco shop in town, snacking on the most delicious ice cream ever for dessert.
What to Bring:
- $25 Trip Fee
- Passport
- A positively AWESOME attitude
How to Get on a Trip:
Because of the limited number of members we can bring, only those who show active participation and interest in the club are selected to go on trips. It is imperative for all members to become as involved as possible. This includes, but is not limited to, attending the general meetings and fundraising events.
